Industrial torch operators often work near radiant heat while wearing protective clothing, gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection, and other PPE. In warm or humid environments, this combination can increase physical strain.
Heat stress considerations should account for the environment, task intensity, protective equipment, work duration, and the condition of the individual worker.
Respirators and physiological workload
Respiratory protection can contribute to perceived exertion, particularly during physically demanding work in hot environments. Breathing resistance, facial heat retention, reduced cooling, and cartridge loading may increase fatigue and make work feel more difficult.
Respirator use should be considered as part of the overall heat burden, not as a separate issue.
Fatigue and decision-making
Heat, dehydration, poor recovery, heavy PPE, and prolonged work can contribute to fatigue. Fatigue may affect concentration, communication, hazard recognition, and decision-making in dynamic burn areas.
