Demolition steel is not new steel
Structural members recovered from demolition, collapse, impact, fire exposure, or dismantling activities may behave differently than newly fabricated steel. Members may be bent, twisted, cracked, partially severed, or altered by previous handling.
These conditions are not always obvious from a single viewing angle or from ground level.
Damaged connections and altered load paths
Demolition activities may compromise welds, bolted connections, stiffeners, gussets, and connection plates. Flanges, webs, braces, and attachments that appear intact may not retain their original strength or support function.
As steel is removed, loads may redistribute through remaining members in ways that are difficult to see without careful evaluation.
Unknown support conditions
Demolition structures frequently contain support conditions that are not readily apparent. Members may be concealed, interlocked, partially cut, suspended, resting on adjacent steel, or supported by debris, piping, equipment, or temporary conditions.
What appears to be an isolated member may contribute to the stability of multiple connected components.
Fire-damaged and distorted steel
Fire exposure, heat distortion, collapse forces, and demolition handling can change the condition of structural steel. Warping, twisting, cracking, and residual stress may affect how members behave during cutting and removal.
